All About Veils

Veils, one of the most common accessory amongst brides. In today's day and age, it is a fashion statement worn in the hair to help elevate and help a bride "feel" like a bride. Its roots stem from various traditions:

  • "Women around the world largely view the wedding veil as a contemporary bridal tradition that signifies innocence and purity." - Courtney, MarthaStewart.com
  • "Historically, veils were used to represent modesty and purity in religious ceremonies, however, the meaning has evolved since." - Megan, GraceLovesGrace.com
  • "It was thought that the veil kept away evil spirits. It was also so that the bride's face was hidden." - Madeline, MadelineGardner.com
Again, it has evolved significantly since and is now used as the perfect accessory for photos - or even just because you love the look of it!

What types of veils are there?

There are so many options these days! Some of the ones that we see that brides love in our boutique are: the fingertip veil and the cathedral veil. There is also an elbow length veil that's well known as well. Cathedral veils are veils that are floor length and trail behind like a train. Fingertip veils are exactly as the name suggests: the length goes down to your fingertips! Elbow length veils are shorter than the three and come down to... you guessed, your elbow.

There are veils adorned with lace all over, some with lace and beading, just beading, pearls, or any combination of these! The possibilities are endless. See some of the popular ones we have below:

Here is a fingertip veil with lace.

Here is another popular veil: the butterfly veil. It is one piece that can drape over and cover the face.

This is a popular one for those brides looking to make a grand entrance: a cathedral veil with lace all over (including going over the top of their hair).

Do I need a veil that matches my dress? Should I wear a veil?

That, my dear, is entirely up to you! There are "no rules" for what kind of style you should have -- this is your wedding! It's a time to show off your personality, creativity and let's be honest.. your Pinterest board come to life.

Some brides opt for a lace veil that matches their dresses' lace, some opt for a completely beaded veil to stand out from their dress. You don't have to wear a veil either - the choice is entirely yours.

I do want a veil! How should I pick one??

Try it on with your dress!! Plenty of our brides pick a veil the same day they buy their dress. Many also choose a veil once their dress arrives in their size (a special order).

Get an idea of what you want to do with your hair, then come in, try on your dress, and try on some veil options. What's the look and feel of your wedding? Do you want to go more glammed up or more laid back? The veil can also help achieve that look and feel!
